Having a Successful Move in Day

Woohoo! Move in day is almost here! I can only imagine how excited and nervous you must be! Before it comes, here are a few things that you need to know in order to make your first college move in day go smoothly!

First, you are going to need to pack up your vehicle as effectively as possible. Try to find tubs or boxes that you can put your items in. This will make it easier to stack and will give you fewer trips when you are unpacking your dorm. In order make more space in my vehicle, I usually fold up my seats and stick items on top of boxes filled with more items. it is important to use every inch of space that you have. Once I fold up my back seats, I usually have a little bit of extra space where the leg room area in the back seat usually is. Also, you need to make sure that you can fully see out of the back of your vehicle so that you can have a safe drive to your campus. Since your parents will more than likely be helping you move in for your first semester, you will probably be able to use their vehicle as well.

I know move in day can be a crazy overwhelming and that you are probably nervous. In order to calm these nerves, be sure to take your housing letter with you (or take a picture of it) so that you know where to unpack your car. Also, check for emails or letters from your college saying what to do on move in day and where to go. Once you are on your way to campus on move in day, it is important to remember to stay calm. You are going to have a great but busy day! By the way, you should probably wear comfortable clothes and shoes on move in day because you are going to be doing a lot of running around and possibly carrying things upstairs!

Like I said above, your college should send you a short email or letter containing information on where you need to go on move in day. Once you arrive on campus, you should be directed to a check in area where you will also receive a list of things that need to be completed by the end of the day. Make sure that you get all of your colleges move in day requirements done so that you won’t encounter any issues during your first week of school!

Once you get this list of things done, it’s time to start unpacking your car and getting to know your new roommate and her family if they are there! Hopefully, you guys have already been in contact before move in day so this shouldn’t be too awkward. However, it is also important to get to know your roommates family just out of kindness. You and your roommate should also start trying to get to know people on campus because your first few days on campus is the perfect time to start making friends!

One last thing that you should keep in mind for move in day is to set aside a little bit of time to make a trip to the store. Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try, you are probably going to realize that you forgot something. So, as you are unpacking, if you realize that you have forgotten an essential, make a list of things that you need to go get and let this be you and your roommates first trip together!

I hope these tips help you have a great move in day! Make the most of it, lovely! In your next lesson, I will be helping learn how to handle living with a new roommate!
